We have just been away for a couple of days to the HTB leadership conference held at the Royal Albert Hall, London. The theme of the conference hosted by Nicky and Pippa Gumble was ‘Leading in love’.
We are all leaders in one situation or another in our lives so we all have a responsibility to lead with love. Jesus modelled this throughout his life showing humility and compassion and always leading with love, being the greatest role model for this type of leadership. Even at the point of his death he led with love.
One of the criminals that were crucified with Jesus said, ‘Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom. Jesus answered him,’ I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.’ (Luke 23:42,43). Jesus showed us how it is possible to love the unlovable.
During the conference, we saw a video interview of Jean Vanier the founder of L’Arche. These are Christian communities now across 35 countries that provide care and accommodation for people with developmental disabilities. As Jean talked to a severely disabled man he told him, “you are beautiful, you are beautiful”. It was a powerful example of leading in love and how we must love the unlovable.
Another speaker at the conference was Simon Sinek. He made the comment that in book shops there are always lots of books about selfhelp but none about helping others! And yet we can find many verses in the Bible that encourage us and indeed command us to help others;
‘God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.’ Hebrews 6:10
‘And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.’ Hebrews 13:16
‘My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.’ John 15:12
‘Not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others.’ Philippians 2:4
Leading in love means helping others unconditionally, no strings attached, not expecting anything in return, loving those who have nothing to offer you in return.
So let’s pray today….
Father make us one,
Jesus make us one,
Holy Spirit make us one.
