Over the last few months the PCC and team leaders of Emmanuel church have been looking again at the vision, purpose and values we hold as a church.

A verse that really spoke to a number of us was 2 Chronicles 13:12a ‘God is with us, he is our leader!’ Our church is called Emmanuel which means God with us but with God as our leader we can be assured of His ongoing wisdom and guidance. That is not to say life will always be easy, far from it, but we can be sure that God will sustain us throughout all situations.

What does the word vision mean? It is the mountaintop view, the big picture, an aspirational and inspirational picture of the future, for example; ‘Emmanuel Church Bicester is growing in our heart for God, and our heart for people.’

While exploring our purpose as a church we have come to believe it needs communicating in various different ways, for those in the church and for those in the community. Our purpose as a church could be described in this way;

'Emmanuel' means 'God with us' and that's fundamental to who we are as a church: Jesus Christ is the foundation of everything we do and everything we are. Our aim is to show people both inside and outside the church how amazing God's Kingdom really can be, and enable them to experience healing, restoration and new life through the power of the Holy Spirit. Currently we're doing that by focusing on worship, prayer and mission; by helping people be better disciples of Jesus Christ; by celebrating the diversity and unity of our church family and those around us; and by doing our best to be at the heart of our local community. To communicate our purpose to the wider community we have created a ‘word cloud’ that includes various words to describe people’s experience of Emmanuel Church Bicester. Finally we have been thinking about the values that underpin what we do as a church community, here is the list so far;

  • WORD AND SPIRIT
  • EVERY MEMBER MINISTRY
  • WELCOME TO ALL
  • NOT DEPENDANT ON ANY ONE PERSON
  • STRONG RELATIONSHIPS &
  • APPROPRIATE STRUCTURES
